The Mad River Trail
The Mad River trail is a moderate hike with 2 sets of stair cases reaching a modest height of 1,500 feet above sea level. In addition to the stairs, there are a couple of bridges for water crossing and a set of boulders to use for a larger water crossing. The trail never leaves the town area, but does occupy both Town land and National Forest Service land as it wanders and weaves through the forest.
Prior to Hurricane Irene in 2011, there was a wooden bridge where the boulders are now, but Irene dropped 7 inches of rain in a 24 hour period, which washed away the bridge and much of the Mad River Trail. The trail was reconstructed in 2012, pushing the trail further inland to protect again any future potential damage.
Enjoy the hike.
